Remembering Frans Elsen

From the autumn of 2007 until the winter of 2011, the piano chair for EJP Sunday concerts at Pavlov was held by one of the forefathers of jazz in Holland, pianist Frans Elsen. Frans Elsen passed away in February of 2011 at the age of 76. In a career spanning six decades, He worked with the likes of Miles Davis and Joe Henderson, and was a member in the bands of Don Byas and Woody Shaw. As well as digging deep into standard repertoire, the group that performed at Pavlov with Frans Elsen specialized in playing the music of Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tadd Dameron and Thelonious Monk.

Until his very last note, Frans Elsen played with the strength and clarity possessed by only the greatest musicians of any age, in any kind of music. His final appearance at Pavlov scarcely a month before he left us found him very much in command of the eloquence, elegance and fire that made him the giant of music that he was. His influence on jazz in Holland is immeasurable. His roles as pianist, teacher, colleague, and friend are irreplaceable.
